Motorola Unveils WiMAX Devices Ecosystem Initiative

Motorola to license its WiMAX chipset-based radio reference design and essential WiMAX IP to enable a broad ecosystem of devices for consumers

Announces first radio reference design licensing agreement with Enfora, a leading wireless networking solution provider

BARCELONA, Spain – Mobile World Congress 2008 – 11 February 2008 – A global leader in wireless broadband solutions, Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT) today affirmed its commitment to enable an industry-wide ecosystem of WiMAX-enabled mobile devices by announcing it will license its mobile WiMAX chipset based radio reference design, Motorola WTM1000 (WiMAX Terminal Modem), to third parties. Uniquely designed to deliver ultra-high-speed functionality through thin devices, Motorola’s WiMAX chipset modem solution is optimized for size and low power consumption to further connect consumers around the globe with mobile wireless broadband.

As part of this program, Motorola also plans to offer essential IP licenses for Motorola’s portfolio of WiMAX patents to third parties.

Through this initiative, Motorola demonstrates its commitment to WiMAX technology leadership by driving penetration of the technology through module designers and manufacturers, making it accessible to a wider ecosystem of consumer electronics manufacturers. The program is a significant milestone in accelerating the proliferation of WiMAX into a wider consumer base.

Motorola is strongly committed to delivering industry-leading WiMAX solutions for the next generation of mobile wireless broadband,” said Gary Koerper, Vice President, Platform Planning and Systems Architecture, Motorola. “By licensing our WTM1000 chipset modem solution and essential IP to partners, we hope to foster the development of great new mobile WiMAX devices and applications across the industry.”

Motorola is joined in this initiative by Enfora Inc., a leader in wireless networking solutions for location-based, monitoring and control and asset management applications. As Motorola’s first WiMAX reference design licensee, Enfora plans to integrate the Motorola WTM1000 solution into its intelligent modules and integrated platforms that are part of its suite of eWiDE™ wireless networking solutions.

Increasingly, our customers are asking for embedded WiMAX solutions to take advantage of next generation mobile broadband data delivery speeds,” said Jeff Newman, Chief Strategy Officer, Enfora. “Our license to Motorola’s WTM1000 reference design provides us with the flexibility to quickly expand our wireless networking portfolio with WiMAX-enabled devices.”

In addition, the WTM1000 chipset-based radio is scheduled to debut in Motorola’s line-up of WiMAX mobile devices for various carriers around the world, including Sprint Xohm.

As a leading provider of WiMAX services, Sprint is highly supportive of efforts that help extend WiMAX technology throughout the industry,” said Bin Shen, Vice President, Broadband, Sprint. “We view Motorola’s licensing initiative as a significant step forward in broadening the market opportunity and ensuring a wide array of WiMAX-enabled devices are available for consumers when our Xohm service goes live later this year.”
