Taiwan Minister Lin Yi-Fu of MOEA (Ministry of Economic Affairs) and Minister of State Tsai Chin-Yen led ranking officials to participate in the contract signing and pronounced the formal opening of the facilities via a symbolic ceremony.

The Center aims at promoting integration of Information, Communication and Telecommunication (ICT) related industries of Taiwan, and as such is in line with Taiwan's aspiration of becoming the region's hub for advanced technologies development. The Alcatel project is the first to receive committed government support in telecommunication industry.

In the congratulatory remarks Minister of MOEA Lin Yi-Fu welcomes Alcatel's action as a fine and exemplary case in responding to the "invest in Taiwan" promotion. On the other hand, he applauds the new Center as a strong catalyst amongst Taiwan's multiple initiatives, such as the M-Taiwan plan (M for "Mobile") under a grand scheme that will see a total budget of TWD 1,080 billion (USD 31 billion) over a period of 5 years up to year 2008. "The "Challenge 2008 - 2 Trillion Twin Star" National development plan hinges a lot on revamping the island's infrastructure, " said Lin, "and ICT is a big part."

Christian Gregoire, Alcatel Asia Pacific Vice President & Chief Technology Officer, said that this Center would focus on broadband wireless application market. More specifically, the key areas for research range from E2E solution, 2.5G/3G solution Interoperability testings (IOT), 3G/B3G Real Time Call Control technology, to other wireless broadband applications such as communication middleware technology. "The ICT 's 3G Reality Centre open platform infrastructure, will foster collaboration among content developers, application designers, and Access/CPE manufacturers in developing content and carrying out interoperability testing," said Christian Gregoire, " The Center aims at co-working with local industries, government units and academics for systems, platforms and services development."

"The objectives for the Center are to train more telecom R&D personnel and to upgrade telecom technology development through the commercial and research cooperation with local institutes," said Jean-Philippe Benoist, Country Senior Officer of Alcatel in Taiwan. "The Center has aggressively planned several projects for core technology development in order to support the evolution of the next generation network, and to ensure that Taiwan remains on the cutting edge of technology advances in the Asia Pacific region".

About M-Taiwan in Challenge 2008 - Two Trillion Twin Star This is a framework development plan government-led to grow Taiwan industries, especially in the IT sections to yield TWD two trillions of value via the two star industries, semiconductor and display, in Taiwan.
