Motorola Expands WiMAX Network for Far EasTone Telecom

-- Expansion projects supported by Motorola's WiMAX end-to-end solutions boost network performance to enable next generation mobile broadband services

TAIPEI, Taiwan, April 21, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/ – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced today that Far EasTone Telecom (FET) has awarded Motorola additional contracts to expand FET's WiMAX network in Taichung, Taiwan. Following the previous WiMAX contracts with FET signed in 2007, these new contracts further signify Motorola's commitment to advanced wireless technology. The projects will boost network performance and provide new management features, preparing FET for the commercial launch of mobile broadband services by the end of 2009.

Motorola will deploy its WAP access point portfolio, Motorola's high-performance base stations for WiMAX networks, and integrate Connectivity Service Network (CSN) Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA)/Home Agent (HA) solution to extend FET's existing network and provide functions like access control and billing. Motorola has also enhanced the previously deployed Network Management System (NMS) for the expanded network and the new CSN components. Motorola NMS increases network stability and availability. It also ensures improved network performance with advanced design and flexible integration capabilities.

FET, the only Taiwan telecom operator with both cellular and WiMAX networks, is expanding its WiMAX network as part of the operator's commitment to the M-Taiwan project, a government initiative to accelerate WiMAX ecosystem development and create a city-wide broadband network. The expansions will enhance network coverage and capacity, ensuring an unmatched mobile broadband experience when FET rolls out commercial services based on 802.16e WiMAX technology. The projects are now underway and are expected to be completed by 3Q 2009.

"We are looking forward to the upcoming launch of WiMAX services that will enable rich media entertainment and high-speed data applications for our customers," said Jan Nilsson, vice chairman and president of Far EasTone Telecom. "The new technology allows us to expand our service offerings, which is crucial to our business development. The WiMAX network expansion will help us ensure that excellent personal wireless broadband experiences are enjoyed by our subscribers. We are pleased to work with a leading provider like Motorola in the design and deployment of such an advanced network."
"The latest WiMAX projects with FET further demonstrate Motorola's leadership in providing cutting-edge mobile broadband technologies that enable consumers to take advantage of the media mobility experience," said Yen Tseng, vice president of South East Asia/India Region, Home and Networks Mobility, Motorola Asia Pacific. "Motorola is a global leader in mobile WiMAX technology, offering an unmatched depth of expertise in OFDM-based network design and deployment. We are committed to WiMAX development and will continue to support WiMAX commercial services rollouts in Taiwan and worldwide."

In addition to network deployments, last year Motorola opened its first Interoperability Testing (IOT) lab for 802.16e-based WiMAX technology in Taiwan. The lab further enhances Motorola's ability to fulfill its commitment in the M-Taiwan project by conducting interoperability tests with a variety of new WiMAX devices.

Motorola provides a full end-to-end WiMAX solution that extends beyond the infrastructure to integration of IP core products, outsourced managed services, and a broad range of customer premises equipment (CPE) and lap top modem products. Motorola's WAP access point and CSN AAA/HA portfolio deliver on the performance and cost advantages of 802.16e-based WiMAX standards-based wireless broadband. Featuring highly integrated and flexible design as well as enhanced RF capabilities, the base stations and CSN AAA/HA are an ideal solution for fixed and mobile service applications.
