Hewlett-Packard Oy and Energia Productions, based in Finland, have agreed on cooperation under which Energia receives HP's new high-performance workstations to speed up the production of  the company's new film initiatives. Energia has produced - mostly with the help of amateurs and the home PCs - a feature-lenght sci-fi parody called Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning, which can be downloaded for free on the Internet. So far, there have been over four million downloads, and a DVD version has sold several thousand copies.

"Filmmaking started as a hobby, grew constantly during the years, and eventually became a profession and a serious business", says Samuli Torssonen, managing director and prodcer for Energia Production. "It took seven years for the home PCs to render the animations. The high-performance graphics workstations that we're receiving from HP can do the same job in few months. Our cooperation with HP helps us to use technology in new, fascinating ways in or coming initiatives, and also to strengthen our business", Torssonen comments.

HP provides Energia with two xw9300 workstations with two AMD Opteron dual-core processors, 4 gigabytes of memory and NVIDEA Quadro FX4500 graphic cards for advanced 3D modelling.

"HP servers, render farms and workstations provides filmmakers with performance that enables the production of demanding animations and effects in a swift schedule. For instance, the American DreamWorks produced the films Shrek1 and 2, Shark Tale and Madagascar with the help of HP's technology. We are glad to support creative and talented filmmakers in Finland as well", says Tomi Toivonen, who is responsible for workstations at HP Finland.

The extremely successful Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning is available for fans through legal multi-channel distribution, as the film was released under the Creative Commons licence, which is more flexible then traditional copyright systems. The film can be downloaded on the Internet and watched on the Mobile-TV channel (DVB-H format) during the Mobile Monday Global Summit at http://www.mobilemonday.net . Future plans include integrating a video blog system offered by HP with Star Wreck's blog for the delight of funs in different parts of the world.
